Each quarter, Union Bank's Community Involvement Committee will highlight a local nonprofit. This quarter the spotlight is on Lutheran Family Services.

“I served on the statewide LFS Board of Directors from 2010—2015 and currently serve on the LFS Foundation Board. I have the utmost respect for the way that LFS leads with vision, financial integrity and courage. In 2016, over 4,800 client visits were supported via the Health 360 location at 23rd & O Streets – Lincoln. I am proud that UBT has, from the beginning, supported Health 360.” – Pete Zandbergen

Lutheran Family Services of Nebraska was founded in 1892 when the organization began serving orphans in Fremont and Omaha. The broad spectrum of Lutheran Family Services programs includes Children Services, Community Services, and Behavioral Health.  Regionally, in 2016 from 11 cities across Nebraska, in western Iowa, & Wichita --- LFS served over 4,300 Children Services client visits, 6,200 Community Services client visits, and 8,100 Behavioral Health client visits.  In Lincoln, Lutheran Family Services, along with two partners, People’s Health Center and Genoa Pharmacy, provides strong leadership to Health 360, an integrated care clinic that offers primary care, behavioral health care and a pharmacy.  People coming to Health 360 receive care from a team of providers who understand the connection between the body and mind.  LFS also offers refugee resettlement services and a range of child and adult behavioral health services.

Children Services - LFS services for children fall into three categories: Prevention and Early Intervention, Permanency and Well-Being, and Children’s Behavioral Health.

Prevention and Early Intervention – Through three programs: Center for Healthy Families, the Maternal Health Care initiative, and the Learning Community Family Liaison Program, Lutheran Family Services works in high poverty areas, and with at-risk families to help eliminate barriers to health, learning, and achievement.

Permanency & Well-Being - Permanency and Well-Being programs offer a continuum of care focused on restoring or creating safe and happy childhoods, including:

  • Adoption Services through Right Turn®
  • Adoption Search Assistance
  • Foster Care
  • In-Home Services and Family Support Services
  • Maternal Health and Pregnancy Counseling
  • Permanent Connections

Children’s Behavioral Health - Children of all ages can be impacted by trauma or negative experiences such as sudden life changes, medical procedures, or family violence. Such incidents can profoundly affect brain development, especially in a child under three. Therapists at LFS specialize in treating children of all ages and their families. Therapy is provided for those experiencing behavioral or mental health issues, substance use concerns, and trauma-related issues with specific programming related to those impacted by sexual abuse.

Community Services - Community Services programs provide high-quality direct support services for refugees, immigrants, asylees and victims of international human trafficking. LFS case workers are knowledgeable and skilled in case management, advocacy, cultural orientation, education, immigration legal services, and employment and job readiness training. The New Populations program offers dozens of services including but not limited to Refugee Education & Employment, Interpretation services, and Immigration Legal Services.

Behavioral Health - LFS aids in identifying and treating anger, trauma, abusive and addictive behaviors as well as providing information, support, and coping skills. Support and education can be found through various resources including Crisis Response, Substance Abuse Treatment, Outpatient Mental Health, and Medication Management. LFS also offers speakers, seminars and workshops on behavioral health issues, and works hand-in-hand with law enforcement and the judicial system.
