Budgeting for summer pet expenses

Summer is a great time for pet owners: It means more outdoor fun and less shoveling a thigh-high snow path and dreading what’s underneath when it melts. We know you don’t normally panic when expenses arise, because savvy pet owners budget for standard expenses like food and vaccinations, illness, and even the occasional emergency. But what about summer pet costs, like travel? Not that we expect you to get Fluffy a kitty passport and send him on a cruise, but chances are good that you’ll have pet-related summer expenses. Here, we’ll talk through some possible expenditures and how to plan ahead so your bases are covered.

Health

We aren’t the only ones who love vacation homes. Heartworms, fleas, and ticks may try to take up residence with your pet during the summer, so you’ll want to budget for these important preventives just as you would your regular wellness meds and procedures. Talk with your vet about costs so you can factor them in to your expenses, and be sure to ask about switching to generic versions of meds or enrolling in a monthly subscription plan that offers a discount. You could also check into ordering from a (legitimate) online distributor for additional savings.

Grooming

Your pets are spending lots of time outside, maybe taking a dip in the wading pool every now and then, and shedding their winter coat all over your new duvet cover — and your car upholstery, and the unsuspecting friends you invited over for a barbecue. Summer grooming’s going to cost a bit more. To be money-mindful, you can probably skip the trendy and overpriced Sudsy Pup Pet Spa and shop around. A summer trim may be in order, the but there’s really no need for specialty treatments and high-end products (although a calming oatmeal bath may be good for summer allergies and skin irritation).

Travel

If you’re off to see the country this summer with your pet in tow, you may need to budget for a more expensive hotel room or vacation home, a pet deposit, and/or other accommodation-related costs. Do you need a travel bed or seat, special crate, or calming drops for the car ride? You may be able to get a great deal at a membership club, pet supply shipping service, or hit up the pet store where you have a rewards card. Are you looking for vacation spots that will welcome your beloved furbaby? Narrow your search on vacation rental websites to “pet friendly,” and scope out welcoming hotels at bringfido.com or petswelcome.com. Search the amenities for signs that the hotel is pet-friendly and not just pet-tolerant.

Boarding

Maybe your feline friend is not invited on your girls’ trip — now what? Boarding is one option for dogs and cats; be sure to compare boarders’ accommodations and prices to find the best fit at the right price. Another alternative is a professional pet sitter. Apps and online services make it easy to locate and vet a pet sitter who’s skilled at caring for furry, feathered, or scaly friends. Don’t overlook the familiar, either — you may be able to recruit a friend or neighbor to take your pet in or stay at your home. For the ultimate budget hack, swap services with them: Is there a pet or garden you can tend to when they leave town?

Daycare

You may be planning on sending your pal to daycare full- or part-time when you’re no longer working from home. Makes sense, as there will definitely be an adjustment period. You might also use the services of daycare (or even a dog walker/exerciser) to help your four-legged friend burn off some extra energy or spend some time with their pawfect peers — in or out of the summer heat. You’ll want to check pricing ahead of time and factor in those costs. Check out online ads for specials.

Don’t forget the extras, like a wading pool (and the goggles you couldn’t resist), a thunder coat for summer storms, a raincoat for summer showers, new summer-themed catnip toys, and some delicious treats. Try out the new frozen ones or see what’s baking at Lucky Larry’s Dog Treats.

In summary, don’t get the summertime blues due to summertime pet costs. Plan ahead, look for deals, and have endless summer fun with your pet — without endless expense.
