Mobile wallets are becoming more widely accepted at retail stores nationwide. If you’re not familiar, mobile wallets allow you to load participating debit and credit cards from most of the major card providers into an app preloaded onto most cell phones. Your phone can then be used to pay at registers and in participating apps and websites using a virtual card number.

Let’s take a high-level look at what mobile wallets are and how they can simplify your life and eliminate some of the items necessary to haul around when you’re away from home.

Bank cards

Have you added your UBT credit or debit card to your smartphone’s mobile wallet yet? Using your mobile wallet is a fast, simple, and secure way to pay for goods and services. You can get started using your mobile wallet immediately by loading your UBT Visa® debit and credit cards into your phone’s mobile wallet — they’re compatible with Apple Pay®, Google Pay™, and Samsung Pay™.

When you use your mobile wallet to conveniently pay at the register or online, your payment will pull from your checking account or charge to your credit card balance — the choice is yours within the app!

Loyalty cards

It may be a while before you can completely ditch your wallet due to some merchants not being set up for mobile wallet payments, but you can certainly start to thin it out right away. The three main mobile wallets allow you to add your loyalty program cards into the app. Most rewards cards use a bar code, and that code is captured by the app and stored — to be displayed when you need to use the card. Simply scan the barcode at the point of sale and get your rewards!

Gift cards

Another space waster in your wallet is gift cards (hopefully!) — and fortunately, your mobile wallet might be able to free up some space here too. If a merchant is set up for it, their gift cards might be loadable to your mobile wallet. Grab your stack of gift cards and start uploading them to make your actual wallet even lighter — in a good way! An added bonus is that when you’re out shopping, you’ll also be more apt to remember to use them.

Tickets

Make your next flight or concert less stressful by loading your tickets into your mobile wallet. Storing them in your phone makes checking in at your plane’s gate or the concert venue a cinch — and no more worrying about where the tickets are, because they’re securely stored in your phone! Simply pull up each ticket for the workers to scan and swipe through until they’re all scanned. Now, go fly those friendly skies or jam out with thousands of your closest friends!

Using your mobile wallet

Get into the habit of using your mobile wallet first. Doing so will help you remember all the great things you’ve uploaded to it, and you can use up any gift cards that remain unused.
