Magic Moments: The Grotrian Family

“What can I do today to make the outcome better?”

– Monique Grotrian

The Grotrian family — high school sweethearts Monique and Jamie, and their 14-year-old twins, Cooper and Joslyn — are the kind of family that inspires everyone around them. Their story is one of faith, family, and fierce advocacy.

In Joslyn’s corner

When Joslyn was a toddler, she was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that affects motor skills and language and brings challenges like seizures and respiratory issues. Monique became her daughter’s strongest advocate, diving into research, finding the best doctors and therapies, and educating herself so she could educate others. The process is ongoing, and Monique remains vigilant — even down to checking and verifying the ingredients in Joslyn’s medications and nutrition — because every detail matters for her health and well-being.

Joslyn doesn’t live life in a bubble, though. She’s had some amazing experiences thanks to her family’s determination. Through a heart project developed by a relative and family friend, Joslyn participated in the Unified Showing Program, proudly showing a lamb each year at the county fair. Today, she dances her heart out through Dancing Beyond Limits, an adaptive program that inspires young girls to go beyond their physical limitations.

“Giving up is not an option.”

Not long after Joslyn’s diagnosis, Monique faced her own battle with breast cancer while her twins were still very young. She fought hard and won, all while continuing to care for her family and champion Joslyn’s needs. When the cancer returned and spread, Monique’s response was unwavering: “Giving up is not an option. Survival is the only option.”  Firmly rooted in faith, she focuses on healing and making every day count — for herself and for her family. Positivity and gratitude are her guiding lights.

Focusing on family

This resilient family continues to keep busy. Cooper loves hunting and fishing with his dad, who processes his own meat, and anything outdoors. Joslyn is into music, reading, and all things Disney. Together, the family cheers for Nebraska volleyball and baseball, claps louder than anyone at Joslyn’s dance recitals, and enjoys treks to the zoo. They treasure time spent making memories — and Monique’s homemade sourdough bread. (We hear it’s delicious.)

Extra love for the Grotrians

This incredibly positive family was nominated for a Magic Moment by Jamie’s cousin, Denise Walbrecht, who admires Monique’s strength and faith. Denise thought they deserved an extra helping of holiday love this season. UBT’s Magic Moments team agreed, and we paired up with our amazing partners to make it happen.

Thanks to generous donors, the Grotrians will enjoy special experiences like Husker baseball games and trips to the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. Practical gifts like gas cards and new tires ensure safe travels for the family, while a Smart Chicken bundle will keep plates full. Each family member received thoughtful items that speak to their interests, and Monique will enjoy relaxing services like massage therapy, sound healing, and float therapy.

Monique, you and your family are truly an inspiration. We wish you, Jamie, Cooper, and Joslyn a season filled with hope, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Happy holidays, Grotrian family!

Note: If you’d like to help the Grotrians, Monique’s family has started a GoFundMe page to help offset medical expenses.
