Magic Moments: The Spangler Family

“Mothers are like glue. Even when you can’t see them, they’re still holding the family together.”

Susan Gale

Jamie Spangler, devoted single mom of four, has faced more than her share of challenges — yet she continues to meet each day with resilience, grace, and an unwavering positive attitude. Her oldest son, Aiden (19), is on the Autism spectrum and lives with severe anxiety, which makes leaving the house difficult. Jamie’s employer allows her to work from home so she can care for Aiden and her three younger children — Avalyn (10), Axton (9), and Ashiyah (7) — while juggling all the responsibilities that come with being a one-woman support system.

Two years ago, Jamie lost her mother, Pamela, who had been her rock and biggest cheerleader. She misses her terribly. Thank goodness for her dad, Ralph, who makes countless drives from Nebraska City to serve as doting grandpa, household handyman, and emotional support person. Jamie shoulders the brunt of the day-to-day stuff alone, though, putting her kids first and finding ways to make life feel not just normal, but amazing (she’s that good).

Kindness and care

The Magic Moments committee received more than one heartfelt nomination for Jamie, and each nominator spoke of her with deep admiration, describing her as a mom who always puts her children first. They emphasized her kindness and genuine care for others. Her close friend, Joy Absalon, and Cathy Martinez, who got to know Jamie and Aiden through the Autism Family Network, describe her as a “superhero mom” who never asks for help. This year, we wanted to give Jamie and her kids a holiday that truly feels magical.

Simple moments, big memories

For Jamie and her kids, the best moments are the simple ones — watching movies together with snacks piled high, laughing in the living room, or playing outside in the backyard. Jamie makes sure her children feel loved and supported every single day, even when life gets hard. She’s the kind of mom who finds joy in the little things and teaches her kids to do the same.

Making spirits bright

We teamed up with our generous partners to surprise the Spangler family with gifts that make life both easier and more enjoyable. The family that loves time together received passes to Marcus Theatres and Prehistoric Putt for plenty of fun outings. Each child received new bedding and curtains to brighten their rooms, plus special items tailored to their interests — iPads for Avalyn and Ashiyah, gaming gear and sports equipment for Axton, and a laptop and favorite restaurant gift cards for Aiden.

Jamie’s gifts were a mix of practical and fun surprises, including an oil change from A1 Automotive to keep the family car running smoothly, a new coffee table from 7 Day Furniture, and a relaxing mani-pedi courtesy of Tips and Toes. We know how much Jamie’s mom meant to the family, so a commemorative brick (donated by Lincoln Parks Foundation) will be displayed in the Sunken Gardens to ensure Grandma Pam’s legacy lives on.

We’re wishing Jamie and crew a season of comfort and joy, as the song goes. We think you’re all incredible. Happy holidays, Spangler family!
