“The scars you can’t see are the hardest to heal.”
—Astrid Alauda
Not all that long ago, Suzy G. felt trapped in an emotionally abusive relationship. It’s so frightening to know you can’t stay where you are, and at the same time to feel like you have no options, or even an escape route. Finally, Suzy found relief and refuge in the form of Fresh Start, a multifaceted program that works to empower women experiencing homelessness and other issues to change their lives. Through the Fresh Start program, Suzy was able to emerge as her own person again. As the pieces fell into place, she found a new job, a dependable car, and a safe new apartment. Her scars were still healing, but Suzy was on her way to a better life, to being whole, and was so grateful to Fresh Start (and still is). It feels amazing to believe in herself, and have others believe in her.
Recognizing your own self-worth
This past summer, Suzy suffered a major medical incident that resulted in multiple unexpected surgeries and procedures. This meant extended time off work — thank goodness her employer held her job — and a pile of bills to pay. Despite her setbacks, Suzy forges ahead, undaunted and grateful for peace and emerging health. She relies on faith to keep her focused and finds healing in quiet moments spent walking or playing with her dog, Molly. Those she has met through Fresh Start round out her circle of family and friends, and she appreciates the common bond, though everyone’s story is different. Happy to have a chance to pay it forward, she reminds other women in the program that true self-care is not manicures and bubble baths, but recognizing your own worth and making your mental wellness a priority. Suzy’s nominator, who asked to remain anonymous, shared her story of strength and determination with UBT. We couldn’t wait to meet this brave lady and grant her a Magic Moment.
UBT, our generous partners, and the Magic Moments team set out to make Suzy’s holiday special. We were able to set her up with a carpet cleaner and some other much-needed household items and supplies. A massage and pampering basket will help take the edge off, and gift cards will help take care of transportation and meals. As Molly the dog is so very important to Suzy, we had a drawing done of Suzy’s furr-ever friend, and Molly received plenty of presents, too!
Suzy, we wish you special joy this holiday — we’re proud of you, of what you have overcome, and of what you’re becoming. Have a healthy and happy holiday from UBT!
