Magic Moments: The Montecuollo Family

Meet the Montecuollos: power parents Seth and Dawn; their terrific teenage daughters, 16-year-old Alexis and almost-14-year-old Alyssa; and two energetic boys, 8-year-old Gavin, and Gannon, who’s 3. They are a family that lives life to its fullest, loves each other to extremes, and works together to handle whatever life gives them. They have always valued time together, and whether it’s building a Lego marvel, exploring the zoo, or competing for the title of reigning board game champion, they maximize time spent together, recognizing family as one of life’s greatest gifts. Another great gift is the ability to share with others, and the Montecuollo Family never hesitates to jump in and lend a hand.

A hard blow

In this last year, this family who lives large and loves hard has had to steel themselves against some of life’s harsh blows: Seth was diagnosed with a devastating form of cancer (Glioblastoma) after some puzzling symptoms he was experiencing pointed to a tumor in his brain. The family has rallied together, with Seth undergoing radiation, chemo, infusion treatments, and an Optune cap with nary a complaint. He has also taken the partial loss of vision in one eye in stride.

A role for everyone

As Seth has not been able to work since December 2020, he has stepped in as chief domestic engineer and laundry captain. Dawn’s work as a nurse is now their primary source of income, and her training enables her to help Seth in many capacities besides that of loving partner. Daughter Alexis has been itching to break in her driver’s license, and now she is family chauffeur while Dawn is at work. Alyssa pitches in wherever she can — she’s a Montecuollo, and that’s just what they do. The boys help, too, and do a great job of cheering Dad on and providing entertainment.

We’re in this together

Both of our nominators (Rhonda Berens and Cathy Martinez) mentioned the esprit de corps of this incredible family — the “we’re all in this together” attitude they share. UBT wanted to celebrate that by making some magic for Team Montecuollo while giving each family member their own slice of holiday joy and creating something special for Seth and Dawn, too. The lovely couple will be treated to a romantic evening at Casa Bovina followed by a performance at the Lied Center for an incredible meal, great show, and quality time together. Movie nights, board games, and Legos will provide entertainment, togetherness, and memories galore, and thanks to generous donations from both the Lincoln Children’s Zoo and the Lied Center for Performing Arts, the family will also enjoy a year of fun excursions and entertainment.

Seth is a big fan of technology, so he received an outdoor Bluetooth speaker for his listening pleasure. Dawn is the recipient of housecleaning and meal prep services so she can focus on family.

Alexis will be sporting new jeans, and have her nose buried in books by her favorite author. She also received gas cards for the Alexis Taxi (otherwise known as her car), thanks to a generous donation from Whitehead Oil/U-Stop. Alyssa is also rocking new jeans, and will be chilling in a new beanbag while she does her reading. Both girls will be getting their nails done for the holidays.

Gavin has a fresh supply of dinosaurs and STEM toys, not to mention video games, while Gannon has been outfitted with dinosaurs and Hot Wheels and other cool new toys. Speaking of outfits, our partnership with Scheels Sporting Goods ensures that the family has the clothing, shoes, and sports gear they need for the winter.
