How to move money to your child’s checking account

Once you have opened your child’s Simply Free Student checking account, you’ll want to ensure they have some spending money in there for any purchases they’ll need to make. Below, we’ll list a couple different ways you can transfer funds into your child’s account — as well as some smart tips about how to access those funds.

Transfer options

The easiest way to put money in your child’s account is to transfer funds from your account to theirs via UBTgo. Your transfer options depend on how you and your child have your accounts and online banking access set up. Here are some common scenarios:

  • If you are an owner or signer on your child's account, you will be able to use your login to transfer money between accounts via an internal transfer. You’ll select which of your accounts you want the money to come from, and then choose to send to their account. (Bonus tip: Give their account a nickname so it’s faster to find in the list!).
  • If your child has their own UBTgo login and wants to move money from their account to yours, they will need to add your account by navigating to Transfer Accounts under the Transfers menu and choosing Add Account, then following the prompts to enter your account information by Adding Another Account at UBT. From there, your account will show up as an option for them when making a transfer. (Note: If you are an owner on their account, their account info will automatically show up in your account summary in UBTgo.)
  • If you are not an owner on your child’s account but you bank at UBT, both of you will need to add each other’s accounts as transfer destinations following the same instructions as above.

For all scenarios listed above, you have three types of transfers available to you:

  • Immediate transfer: An instant, one-time transfer of funds.
  • Recurring transfer: A transfer set to occur regularly — for example, a monthly allowance.
  • Future transfer: A one-time transfer of funds set for a future date, such as a birthday or special occasion.

Make deposits with ease

Whether your child needs to deposit a check from grandma or some cash from their lemonade stand, just bring them to your local branch and a friendly banker will help deposit the money into their account. They can also deposit checks using the mobile deposit feature in UBTgo — simply tap Deposit at the bottom of the screen and select Deposit Check, then take pictures of the front and back of the check.

Once your child gets their first part-time job, they can also receive direct deposits in their Simply Free Student account. When that day comes, they’ll just need to know their account information, such as their account number and UBT’s routing number (104910795).

Spending options

Now that your child has their own checking account, they’ll be able to spend their own money easily. Here are some of the different ways they can spend the funds in their account:

  • Debit card: Once funds have been transferred into your child’s account, your child can spend them via their very own designer debit card. (For tips on guiding their spending and setting up customized alerts, controls, and limits, click here.)
  • Mobile wallet: For an easier way to spend securely, your child can also add their debit card to their mobile wallet. This also ensures that they’ll virtually always be able to spend when they need to, even if they left their debit card at home. Note that your child must be 13+ to add their own card to their mobile wallet and use Apple Pay® or Google Pay™ — if they’re under 13, options vary depending on your device.
  • ATMs: Any UBT account (including your child’s Simply Free Student account) also comes with the perk of our vast network of 24/7 ATMs. If you’re away from home or if we don’t have any ATMs near where you live, we also belong to the MoneyPass network of ATMs which offers surcharge-free options across the United States.
